    Hey Brian,
    I do it all!
Ok, I do not email it.
I do not Digg or Stumble it.
I also do not enter chat rooms.

So I guess – I do some of it.

  2. Brian says:

Hi Sheryl, I used to Digg each post but I read somewhere that it’s a bad idea.

  3. Gennaro says:

I’ve read in a bunch of places that Stumbled Upon is better than Digg for traffic and bounce rate. I’ve seen that it’s true in limited usage. I’ve only Stumbled my site and one post as I’m new to it. I’ve tried smaller things like BlogEngage or Dizzed b/c they’re easier for newer blogs to get traction.

I will use a niche forum to promote a post only if I have something that I know the readers will find useful. Like a free things to do in____ for a backpacker forum.

I comment on sites too, but often to learn more about blogging or other topics. Not so much to promote a post. Most blogs that have CommentLuv or a lot of comments, in general, are outside my niche (travel), but provide me with valuable info.

  4. Brian says:

Hi Gennaro, I’ve heard that about StumbleUpon too. StumbleUpon, like Twitter, is one of the things I’m trying to make a daily activity.

It sounds like you have a good grasp on forum posts and I already know you are great at blog commenting.

  5. Dennis Edell says:

Up to this point, blog commenting. And it’s worked quite well. As i get myself more organized in the new year I will add social networking and get back into forums…

…the first marketing method I ever learned and still one of my faves.

  6. Brian says:

Hi Comment King :) I’m with you Dennis, I think social networks are going to be a big part of our future.

  7. Sheryl Loch says:

I would say that the social networking has come & gone as it was.

The social sites have to change. Many of them have become spamland. You can use them for getting a few links but, not customers or readers. Once the business people found the free sites they just sling links & PM ads.
I have tried many sites and found that many of the people there are only spammers, that will even tell you that if you join a social site it is just for sending ads. You have to pick and choose the sites you join or be ready to block allot of people.

Heck, I even spent 2 years running those type of sites. I bet many will go to a paid membership of some kind. Forums are also going to start following the same.

  8. Brian says:

Hi Sheryl, I was just watching one of Garry Conn’s videos and he seems to have a similar opinion on social networking. You may be onto something but I’m not quite ready to give up on social networking yet. I’m just starting to understand it so I hope it’s not going anywhere lol

  9. Sheryl Loch says:

Who do you think Gary calls when he needs help? I have been trying to tell him this for a year & Garry just caught on. He is sooo yesterday. LOL!

You can use them & some are good. BUT, I have done better sales using forums that I ever got using social sites. I also get more hits to my blog from forums. Now, things like Twitter will be around but, the user has full control of who they hear from.

Both of these things take time to get results, that is why I am also working at getting my articles to the top of SERS.

Ok, gotta go I think another Guru is calling. LOL!

  10. Steve | Trade Show Guru says:

    hey Brian,
A good and timely question. To clarify one thing though, your title made me think this was about promoting one’s blog, but I think from the post it is actually about promoting individual posts – which I think are two different things. I was actually thinking of writing a post saying if you had a fairly new blog and you had $100 to spend on promotion, how would you spend it? One of many post ideas, but few seem to make it out of my head. :) ~ Steve, the trade show guru

  11. Brian says:

I guess I did have blog post promotion in mind but I’m really just looking for great promotion ideas. Blog, site, posts, I’m not picky. As far as the comments go, well, we kind of go all over the place here but it’s fun.

A $100 promotion post sounds like a great idea. A $100 promotional contest sounds even better. Either way, I’ll be there. Let me know when and where and I’ll be ready with my keyboard and typing finger ;)

  12. Steve | Trade Show Guru says:

    hi Brian,
Just to clarify, I’m not planning any $100 giveaway contest anytime soon. :)
I was more thinking I might ask the “experts” if they had a budget of $100 to promote a blog, what would they do with it? I’ve seen services that say they’ll submit your site to 1,000 directories for $9.95, but something tells me you get what you pay for. I was just wondering if a person has a limited budget, what gives the best bang for the buck… ~ Steve, the trade show guru
BTW, your about page says you have 110 domains? Are they all up and running, or are most of them parked?

  13. Brian says:

Hi Steve, I understand and think it’s a great post idea. I just thought it would be cool for a bunch of us to take $100 of our own money and see who can get the most of it.

Almost all of them are parked right now. I may start pulling a handful out and try a little ppc and ppa sites.

  14. leanie belle says:

    Hi Brian

I am actually doing those things and I think it is working for me in building more traffic to my sites. Thanks.

  15. Kikolani | Blogging, Photograp says:

I promote new posts in the following ways:

Social network status updates/broadcasts: Twitter, Facebook, Blog Catalog

Bookmarking: I send to my friends on StumbleUpon, and I submit to Digg and put the badge at the beginning of the blog post for easy digging.

Commenting: I have a Google Reader subscription folder for blogs with DoFollow, TopCommentator, and/or CommentLuv. I comment on these sites first, then I move onto my next folder of people who frequently comment on my site.

Groups: If I belong to related groups or forums in any network (Facebook, BlogCatalog, Friendfeed rooms, etc), I make a post with a link to my new blog article.

I think that about covers the primary things I do. :)

    ~ Kristi

  16. Brian says:

That’s a fantastic list Kristi! I subscribed to your Friendfeed, StumbleUpon and I think a couple others. I’ve spent an hour going over your methods. I just updated my StumbleUpon which was very outdated.

I haven’t used the group marketing much but I’m going to start again. I’m taking these ideas from friends and making a checklist I can use after each post.

Thanks for all the details, it means a lot :)

  17. Kerry says:

I found your blog on google and read a few of your other posts. I just added you to my Google News Reader. Keep up the good work. Look forward to reading more from you in the future.

  18. Work At Home Blog says:

    Hi Brian,

The first thing after I post, I promote to Warrior Forum to get a linkback and backlink. If I think it’s a good one, I’ll have it inserted in my signature. My next promotion after I post is submit to Propeller. These are the 2 must haves. I don’t digg because a long time ago, I got banned without knowing why. I do lots of blog commenting to promote the posts. I let others stumble my post because stumbling your own post is considered bad.

    Peter Lee

  19. Brian says:

Hi Peter, I’m not surprised you are a member of the Warrior Forum. They have over 120,000 members and virtually every successful marketer posts there. I’ve been a member of the Warrior Forum since June 2006 and have only posted four times. How pathetic is that? I’m going to make it a point to start posting there. I just sent you a friend request. I’ll follow your posts a little to see what I can learn if you don’t mind. I need to see what is accepted and what’s not.

I never joined Propeller but I will now :)

Great advice, thanks for sharing that with us.

  20. Promotional Products says:

Yes social networks are a great way to promote posts, and allowing for comment luv as well. Allowing do follow comments will definitely increase your readership.

  21. Brian D. Hawkins says:

We’ve got it all here. We’re a Do-Follow blog, we use CommentLuv, KeyWordLuv and the TopCommentator Widget.

  24. Extreme Networking says:

I personally hope the social networking does go out of style. I agree with Sheryl – it’s full of spam, and the biggest majority of people are just their to promote themselves.

As far as my blogs, I ping them, bookmark my posts occasionally, comment on other related blogs and link to them from articles. Seems to work pretty well!

    Thanks for sharing

  25. Extreme Social Networking says:

Hi Tess, I don’t think social networking is going anywhere anytime soon. I’m glad you mentioned pinging, I started doing the same thing since Sheryl’s post
