The Best Anti-Spam WordPress Plugin: Akismet

I love Akismet. Akismet is a WordPress plugin that saves me a ton of time sorting out real blog comments and comment spam. Our comment spam was on the rise in the first half of October but hopefully it will level off for a while. Akismet saves me the trouble of getting excited about such increases. With a 99.35% overall accuracy rate, it’s just a simple matter of scanning the ‘Akismet Spam‘ page and deleting all the spam with a single click. This cool plugin allows me to concentrate on the legitimate comments. spam_graph_102008.jpg

Yeah can’t live without askimet.. but be sure to check it often because there might be some valid comments that askimet sees as trash.

Hi Ben, It’s true, I’ve definitely found a few comment in the wrong category but it’s amazing at the accuracy. Google’s Gmail is the same way. I don’t know how they do it but the accuracy rates are very impressive.

i dont think it is the best..
i am getting 100s of spam daily even i have latest updated akismet :(

Hi David. It doesn’t really stop spam but is it finding the comment spam and putting it into the ‘Akismet Spam’ section? I don’t think there’s a way to really stop blog spam. I am going to start banning IP address and see if that helps keep some of the returning offenders from coming back.

I really liked you blog post! I searched all over to finally find something that made sense! Would you mind terribly if I place a link back from my site at whiterabbitcult.com?

Askimet is a very good way to stop automated spam, but I found it was better to just move the form over to AJAX. You just use JS to post the form instead – not had any spam in months :)

Thanks David, I’ll have to look into that. I’ve noticed that Askimet is letting a lot of comment spam through lately. It doesn’t make it completely through but it is causing me a lot of extra moderation work. Askimet should look into IP addresses as a clue on who is spamming. If the same IP address comments ten times in a few minutes is’s certanly a spam bot.

Akismet is really good but I think bloggers should also manually check their blog for spam free.
