Finding the perfect domain name for your next project can be tough. It can also become addicting once you get the hang of it.
There are many tools to aide in your search but I use the free online tool from Yahoo. It’s very easy. Go to their domains section and search for a domain that you know isn’t available such as Yahoo.com. Then click on ‘»See similar name options‘. Now every time you search for a domain name Yahoo will offer similar domains that are available.
Important: Use Yahoo! to find your new domain name but never use them to buy it. As of now you will be slapped silly with a crazy $34.95/year renewal fee. [See Yahoo Price Gouging @ $34.95/year] If you are buying the domain just to sell it later I recommend GoDaddy.com. Due to the whole Mike Filsaime issue back in 2005 [See this WebProWorld.com thread or this .PDF newsletter]. I try to stay clear of GoDaddy for sites I use. I use PowerPipe to register sites that I plan to put online.

Thanks for the gentle reminder..It’s time to transfer my domain from Yahoo to name.com as some of them are expiring pretty soon.
I was at joy the other day when I manage to secure a domain (dailyforexchange.com) from name.com. Oh yeah, I use instantdomain search whenever I do a search, have you tried that before? It’s sleek and the results appear almost instantly..

I prefere going for a brandable domain name rather than a keyword stuffed. When you manage to get the site running it’s better when people have something to refer to that is not creditcardforbadcreditcustomers.com or something like that.
Just make sure to get at least one of your keywords in there somewhere. I made the mistake of not doing that with my main blog, and I’ve been kicking myself for the last three years, heh. It’s a lot harder to rank for keywords without having them in the URL!
Hi Lindsay, nice point. As long as it’s not a string of keywords for SEO benefit I agree. I always regretted my fist domain, CheapAzz.net. It wasn’t a .COM and it just sounded bad. The product of not thinking things through. I bet I didn’t spend two minutes picking it out.
Hi,
I read the Mike Filsaime reponds to what happen with Godaddy.com. Interesting. It’s good to be informed. Information can save you time and a heartache.
To your success and happiness,

Thanks for the post. Ive not used yahoo or godaddy…ive always used namecheap.com I think they charge like 6 bucks or something like that.
namecheap.com is a big one. I haven’t heard anything bad about them. I have about seventy domains with PowerPipe.com
Hey Brian,
I just checked out the Yahoo.com domain search tool and it is very excellent.
I’ll remember not to buy any domains from them, though. At $34.95/year, that is a big ouch.
