New Look With A Faster Loading WordPress Theme

image - thumbnail of old themeI feel like I lost a lot of weight when I look at the new theme the Extreme Ezine is using. Just the other day I was on the new blog of Dennis Edell and commented about load time. I’ve known for a while that the Extreme Ezine blog was far too heavy and to long to load. I decided to get that corrected yesterday.

The first thing I did was run a few tests. I compared the Extreme Ezine with a few other sites and it wasn’t pretty. I ran five (5) tests in a row using iWebTool.com’s Website Speed Test. You can see the complete results here but here are the averages:

Domain name      Size      Average Load Time

http://csc4u.com/ 9.73 KB     0.39 seconds (basic HTML site)
http://kikolani.com/ 40.27 KB     0.77 seconds (Thesis Theme)
http://www.dailyblogtips.com/ 25.53 KB     0.92 seconds
http://www.copyblogger.com/ 28.11 KB     0.99 seconds (Thesis Theme)
http://www.dennisedell.com/ 21.13 KB     1.77 seconds (not complete)
http://www.problogger.net/ 52.04 KB     1.23 seconds
http://thatsrightisaidit.com/ 41.28 KB        4.23 seconds (micro-blog)
http://wassupblog.com/ 85.33 KB     5.12 seconds
http://www.youradtracker.com/ 27.63 KB     5.26 seconds
http://extremeezine.com/              52.55 KB       5.44 seconds

As you can see the Extreme Ezine came in dead last (with our previous theme). Just by choosing a lighter and cleaner theme we were able to cut the load time in half to 2.72 seconds. That’s still too slow so now comes the work of cleaning up the code and dropping a few plugins. My expertise is very limited in this area so I may need to hire a pro.

I like the clean look and it seems easier to navigate. I will miss a few lost features but we can’t have it all. I’m still trying to get a decent photo gallery plugin working. I love the photo gallery running on ExtremeJohn.com but I can’t get it working for some reason. Hopefully we’ll see those promotional button pics rotating soon.

What are your thoughts about the change and new look? Is load time a big factor to you? Go ahead, I can take it ;)

A quick note about the Thesis Theme: Kristi of Kikolani kicked everyone’s tail with respect to load time in my test. She’s using the Thesis Theme (her affiliate link). I ran a separate test with five sites (Kikolani.com, ChrisBrogan.com, CopyBlogger.com, SugarRae.com and LaughingSquid.com) that are using the Thesis Theme. I ran the test five (5) times and ended up with an average speed of 1.4 seconds with all the sites. That’s very impressive so I think I’ll end up using the Thesis Theme in the end.

Fine Example Of Viral YouTube Marketing

In The Spotlight

Anyone that has spent more than an hour on YouTube knows how cool many of the videos are. They also know how lame most of them are. The great ones go viral and that’s exactly what HornBlasters.com has achieved.

I found a pretty funny YouTube video the other day through a tweet by John Sullivan @jsinkeywest. It’s Train Horns Scare Daytona Florida! [below] by Matt Landon Heller of HornBlasters.com Matt has many YouTube videos, several with around half a million views. The video below alone has over 440,000 views, 860 ratings (4 1/2 stars) and 853 comments. Can it get more viral than that? Driving traffic to their site to sell product – that’s what I’m talking about! I love this stuff. My hat’s off to YouTube Viral Marketing at it’s best and HornBlasters.com. I am now a big fan.

Extreme Advertising By Reebok – Better Legs And A Better Butt With Every Step

image - Reebok EasyTone SneakersI love extreme advertising and it’s my duty to point out the good ones every now and then so I invite you to watch this short 31 second commercial by Reebok. I actually watched this on TV before I found it on YouTube so I know it’s getting air time.

Before you watch the commercial let me point something out. In the first 24 seconds (the part with the model) you actually only see the product (EasyTone sneakers) for about one second. Reebok knows what product to focus on and it’s not the sneakers. It’s not even the legs.

Having only a man’s perspective, if even just one man’s, I wonder what woman think of the ad. Here’s what my friend Sheryl Loch had to say about it, “I saw that commercial last night & wondered if they could help me. Do you think I could sleep in those shoes & wake with a firm butt?” That just goes to show you, men and woman sometimes think along the same lines lol

I don’t know how effective Reebok’s EasyTone shoe commercials are but I like them. They will no doubt offend a few people but that’s ok as long as the message makes it’s mark. What is the message? That’s easy, “Better legs and a better butt with every step“. Wasn’t you paying attention ;)

The Keyword Academy – My Highest Recommendation

As my long time online friends and subscribers know, I don’t recommend very many products. I ONLY recommend products I personally use. With that said I’d like to introduce what is now at the top of my recommended products – The Keyword Academy.

I’ve been a member of The Keyword Academy for a little over two months now and I’ve been able to turn what I’ve learned there into profit. There have been very few products I’ve been able to make that statement about. I HIGHLY recommend this program!

The Keyword Academy is a paid membership site that teaches everything from keyword research to AdSense site building using a step-by-step approach with videos and other tools. Run by Court Tuttle and Mark Butler, TKA is hands down the most important step I have taken to advance my understanding of AdSense, keywords, link building, niche websites and judging the competition. Yes, all the things we think we know as Internet Marketers. There’s always room for learning and this is certainly proof of that.

Mark and Court teach EVERY detail needed using video, transcripts, tutorials, webinars, Q&A sessions, a blog and an awesome forum.

Here’s the deal: The Keyword Academy costs $33 per month and you can try your first month for just $1. If you are still struggling to make a profit online you need this. A dollar isn’t much to risk to try it out but I’m going to make completely risk free for you…

Sign up with my affiliate link and watch the core videos. If you don’t think it was worth the investment, cancel before the first thirty days and I will refund your dollar personally. Enough said, try The Keyword Academy for just $1 dollar today.

Interview With Toilets.com Founder Earl Braxton – The Don of Porta John®

image - Toilets.com Founder Earl BraxtonI would like to thank Earl Braxton for giving this interview. Mr. Braxton has an amazing history and after talking with him I know his future plans are just as big and just as amazing. Mr. Braxton owns the Porta John® portable toilet company. Notice I said ‘The’ and not ‘a’ Porta John® company. The next time you hear someone going to the Porta John you will know that is a brand that Earl Braxton built and owns. Mr. Braxton owns and runs the website Toilets.com.

Earl Braxton is also the president of the Michigan-based Pharmaceuticals.org where he, with no formal research training, developed a system to recover medicines from waste and preventing them from entering our water systems, a patented process that can easily isolate many over-the-counter and prescription drugs from urine. Mr. Braxton seen the need and a business opportunity for such a process back in 1991 simply by watching a doctor dispose of a needle.

Interview with Earl Braxton, Porta John’s founder and president of Porta John Systems.

(EE): You own the brand ‘Porta John®‘ which, according to Google, is searched for 1300 times a month. Your site, Toilets.com is at the number one position in the search results. How were you able build such a strong brand that the name in itself became the industry standard?

(Earl Braxton):We average 21,000 page views per day.

(EE): It looks as if you have owned the domain Toilets.com since 1997. Were you the first to register that remarkable domain or did you purchase it.

(Earl Braxton):We were the first to register this and many other related domains.

(EE): I understand you own well over a thousand domains acquired as far back as the nineties. How did you have the insight to build your domain portfolio?

(Earl Braxton):Yes, we do own many domain names. We will use these Internet Addresses in the preparation to franchise and license our business model.

(EE): There is a rumor that you had a little run in with the late Johnny Carson, TV talk show host. Would you care to elaborate?

(Earl Braxton):We were sued by John W. Carson regarding our trademark “Here’s Johnny” and lost on the right to publicity claim by the late Mr. Carson.

Mr. Carson subsequently abandoned all “Here’s Johnny” trademarks for use on portable sanitation units and we applied and received the trademark, “Here’s Johnny” from the United States patent office. The Estate of John W. Carson has opposed the issuance of the Trademark to me. I am currently awaiting the decision of the Trademark Office.

(EE): What forms of online advertising do you use, if any, to drive traffic to your site and what do you find is most effective?

(Earl Braxton):We have been receiving E-mails and phone calls from all over the world for more than ten years at a rate that is very gratifying.  We are now preparing to expand our manufacturing plant to meet the demand for our new proprietary Comfort Station products.

image - Toilets.com roadside billboard(EE): You have run roadside billboards with the single word ‘Toilets.com’ as the entire ad. This has been coined a “marketing masterpiece”. What gave you the idea to use such a simplistic approach for that campaign and what were the results?

(Earl Braxton):My good fortune was to have been alive and in business during the onset of the Internet Era.  This is a marketing gift of titanic proportions.  If any business can take advantage of this phenomenon and fails to do so “Shame on Them”.

(EE): Most men of your generation have never been online or have used a computer. You are using up to four computers at a time in any given moment. Have you always been open to changes and new trends.

(Earl Braxton):My good fortune was to be blessed with a wife, friends, co-workers and  family members who let me do my own thing from the very beginning.

(EE): Your portable toilet company ships worldwide. I understand you have shipped hundreds of portable toilets to Iraq. How difficult was it to break into the global market?

(Earl Braxton):Until the advent of the Internet it was very difficult.  Now it is much easier if you make products that meet the customers’ requirements.

Since 12/01/06 we have sold products in all 50 States, 3 Commonwealth Territories and 33 countries.

(EE): You have many registered trademarks and patents. What advice would you give up and coming entrepreneurs in regard to obtaining their first patent or registering a trademark?

(Earl Braxton):Make sure your concept satisfies a need.  The best person to get your money from is your customer because you don’t have to pay it back.

(EE): One last question. You have had the foresight to recognize new trends and the confidence to act on them. What do you see coming next? What’s the next big trend we should watch for?

(Earl Braxton):There is a trend toward eliminating portable toilets for safer and cleaner sanitation stalls.  Thus we have received patent #6721697 for our Comfort Station that has no waste storage in the lavatory stall, no chemicals and no steps for greater handicapped accessibility.

Time may be running out for the ubiquitous portable toilet. Our latest E-mail exchange with the Center For Disease Control can be seen here.

Cleaning Up Our Online Act | FTC’s Advertising Guidelines

I’m not going to rehash all the news today about the guidelines released by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). If you’ve been asleep and missed it see ‘Potential FTC Fines Raise Big Blogging Questions‘.

Most of what I’ve read today is a lot of strong concerns and objections on the matter. When it comes to the Government we tend to immediately distrust the decisions and I’m no exception. But I would like to explain why I feel hopeful when it comes to online marketing.

If the internet’s overall reputation regarding advertising is cleaned up and consumer confidence improves we all win. If old Uncle Ed decides to trust the net enough now to buy a few Christmas presents online this year every online business gets a little boost in credibility.

It’s not only the scammers that have been hurting the net and internet marketing in general. It’s all of the marketers that push products based on the profit margin and/or affiliate commission rather than the actual value it provides the customer. You see these guys blasting emails every single day offering something different with each mailing. It would be great if some of this disappears. All they have to do at this point is disclose the fact they profit from the sale. Wouldn’t it be nice if they had to actually believe in and use every product promoted? Yes, I’m a marketer and it sounds like I’m against marketing but it’s just the opposite. I love this industry and would love to see it cleaned up. I posted a little on the matter about two weeks ago ‘Brian D. Hawkins – A Name You Can Trust‘.

I usually keep opinion based posts for my personal blog but decided to share this one with my marketing and blogging friends. Speaking of friends, stop by ExtremeJohn.com and read his opinion on the subject. He hits the nail right on the head – ‘Bullshit Review Bloggers Time to Get Honest‘.

Five Quick And Easy Steps To A One Page AdSense Site

I’ve been building niche blogs and static sites and I thought I’d share how quick and easy it is to setup a one-page AdSense site.

1. Find a template
Assuming you already have the niche figured out, the domain, keywords and the content ready I recommend searching Google for free CSS templates. There are thousands of great looking free templates out there and most just want a link in the footer.

CSS‘ stands for Cascading Style Sheets and if that’s new to you don’t be intimidated. CSS is basically just a way to control the structure and appearance of the site you are designing, in this case I’m referring to simple HTML sites. CSS templates allow easy changes of colors, font and layout. Most are ‘tableless‘ helping them load quickly.

I recommend a nice and simple template. A header, footer and one, two or three columns is about all you need.

2. Edit the images
Change or edit the graphics to fit your niche if necessary. Keep in mind we’re creating a fast and easy niche site so perfection is not needed. Keeping it simple is the best bet. Don’t use too many graphics and keep the file sizes low. Fast loading pages are much more important than impressing people with our images. The goal is to guide visitors interested in the topic to the next step (action) by clicking an ad link for more information.

3. Ad Placement
AdSense allows up to three ads on a single page. Problogger has a three part post on Positioning your Adsense Ads that’s worth reading.

Don’t place AdSense ads next to images to ‘enhance‘ them in any way and don’t try to hide the fact they are advertisements. All of the ad must be readable including the ‘Ads by Google‘ statement.

I will often toss in a ClickBank or Market Leverage ad into the mix to help monetize the page.

4. Adding Content
Content is an important part of an AdSense site. You MUST have content and it needs to be relevant to the niche. Pages with just ads are in violation of the AdSense terms. It’s important to give visitors valuable content yet you don’t want to give away the whole ball of wax. You want to leave them wanting more but give them enough to want it from your links. It takes practice but use the content as a guide or call to action. NEVER EVER ask visitors to click on an ad. This is another big AdSense terms violation.

5. Promoting Your Niche Site
Once you have your site up and optimized with key word rich content it’s time to start promoting it. One of the easiest methods of promoting and gaining backlinks is by commenting on related blogs.

For the last couple of weeks I’ve been working with a couple of article marketing tools that I am very impressed with. I’ll be writing a review very soon but I’ll give you a ‘heads up‘ now.

  1. The first is Free Traffic System. Free Traffic System is a powerful way to submit articles to many blogs at once and they have a system to help make the content somewhat unique for each blog.
  2. Magic Article RewriterThe second tool is Magic ArticleRewriter. This as an incredible tool. I just purchased it and it’s very easy to use. Be sure to watch the video, it’s amazing. Magic Article Rewriter works with Free Traffic System and the two together should move your article marketing to the next level.

Do it again, and again…
One AdSense site isn’t going to get you anywhere. I recommend setting an initial goal of 100 sites. If you only earn $3 a month per site you are still doing pretty well. That will cover the ten dollars a year for domain registration, cheap hosting and you will gross $300 a month. You should do much better than three dollars a month but that’s just an example. Once you have those hundred sites running and doing well on Google just double it. You can see how quickly this can add up.

Ten Reasons To Start A Paid Membership Site

Out of the various sites I’ve ran over the years membership sites have, by far, been the easiest to profit from. Easier than forums, classified sites, safelists, niche sites, ad boards, surfing sites and blogs. From my own personal experience I have listed my top ten reasons to start a membership site. If I had a membership script to sell I might offer reasons like viral traffic, low investment, little overhead, no inventory to ship or stock, no billing, and huge potential for growth. While all true, I want to go a little deeper than
that.

  1. Subscription Payments: If you haven’t been on the receiving end of ‘subscription payments’ you are truly missing out. Whether you call it passive or residual income, automated or autopilot profits, subscription payments quickly add up to a nice income from the daily payments you receive from your members. Do you want to wake up every single morning and smile as you see the subscription payment notifications in your email? Start a membership site! I haven’t gone a single day without making money for a couple of years now.
  2. List Building: Most membership scripts have list and mailer functions built right in or automatically add members to your autoresponder. As a personal preference I prefer a third-party list management integration rather than mailing from your own shared or dedicated server. Using a professional service such as AWeber makes sense for many reasons. [See The Battle For Email Deliverability]
  3. Backend Income Potential: Upgrades, one-time-offers, bonuses, limited time offers, upsells and other rich features are built into the higher end scripts.
  4. Cross Promotions: You can use your membership base to drive traffic to other related sites that offer products, services or affiliate products. Have a new e-book you need to get out there? Offer it at a discount to your members. Of course you still have the basic options such as banner ads and programs like AdSense.
  5. Advertising Potential: Once you have a significant amount of site traffic you can easily sell banner and text advertising. How about offering a featured member spot? You could even have a little fun with it and use an auction to sell the ad. You have a new list now why not offer ezine ads?
  6. Keeping It Real: A paid membership will help keep the spam and free loaders out and keeping the numbers honest. Anyone will join a free membership but only those truly interested will pay to join.
  7. Establishing Yourself As An Expert: This may seem a little cliché but even if the media isn’t knocking on your door your members will consider you an expert. If they don’t you will have little success. That recognition and reputation will carry into other online areas. Keep your members happy, a unique and fresh site, and you will quickly gain respect in that field.
  8. Affiliate Base: If you have an affiliate program built into your membership site it wont take long at all to see who your top sellers are. Building this base of top performing  affiliates is a priceless benefit that can pay off big with future projects. Build those relationships as quickly as possible and keep them active.
Other more directly beneficial reasons to run an affiliate program with your membership site are the extra advertising, traffic and back links provided by your affiliates.
  9. Unlimited Possibilities: Membership sites are everywhere and many are doing very well. A site providing valuable and unique content in any niche has the potential of being a paid membership site. Are you or do you have access of a professional dog trainer? How many people would join a paid site loaded with weekly videos on actual dog training techniques? We see some pretty big named marketers with membership sites that resell digital products with various resell rights. Others are providing specialized courses and online training. How about an interview site where a new expert is interviewed every month? A coupon club membership? How about a site that gives great personal one-on-one investment advice? Well, you get the point. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination.
  10. Saleable Asset: An established membership site with a proven track record can bring in a nice sum when it’s time to sell and move on.

There are many things to consider before investing in your own membership site. Time is the big one. Time is a variable factor depending on what your membership site will offer. Just like a blog, fresh content is a must – only now your visitors are paying for it. That puts the pressure on you to do it right. Developing and marketing the site can also take up a lot of your time. Then you have the updates, upgrades and support issues. These things are easier to deal with once you establish a regular income ;)

Snickers – Extreme Branding

snickers_billboards.gifsnickers barThere’s been a lot of marketing buzz about the recent massive Snickers campaign using distinctive made-up words without any actual mention of the brand itself. Snickers, owned by Mars, Inc., has billboards, bus & taxi ads along with broadcast commercials relying on font and color recognition to promote their brand.

There are many blog posts about the campaign, both good and bad. Personally, I’m impressed. My first thoughts are the actual strategy behind the campaign must be to reinforce the brand. This is obvious since anyone not already familiar with the candy bar would have no idea what they were looking at. Words like Nougatocity and Peanutopolis would be confusing to those that don’t recognize the brand’s distinctive, yet very plain, image.

What impressed me, even though they’ve had millions of dollars and years to do it, is how successful the Snicker’s branding actually is. Just the simple font and colors are enough to generate instant recognition for millions of people. Well, that and I like the candy bar :)
