How The News Can Help Guide Your Niche Sites

Key word research is an important part of seeking out lucrative niche domains. I’ve been working with domains targeted to specific topics that we see and hear in the news. I have many news based domains but I’ll just list a few.

Last week I blogged about Sarah Palin. A niche domain about Sarah Palin would have been a great idea at the beginning of the last presidential campaigns.

So what’s in the news today? You can’t watch a news segment without hearing about Cash For Clunkers. Just this morning I decided to take advantage of this to be short lived news topic with a small AdSense site: Cash For Clunkers Facts

National healthcare reform also dominates the news on a daily basis. I believe this one will be around for a while. I just built two AdSense sites geared toward the topic of National health-care reform: National Healthcare Facts and Universal Healthcare Facts

All three AdSense sites are key-word rich and search engine optimized. Each are just hours old at the time of this post and not even included in Google yet. Some will say these niches are too competitive and they may be correct. Time will tell as I begin to promote them.

I’m running a little late on both of these ‘news niches‘ yet I was able to find a decent domain name. Wouldn’t it be great to jump on the next big national or international news topic? If you could register within minutes of big breaking news you would certainly end up with a premium domain worth it’s weight in gold. Another reason to watch the news?

I did want to mention one more thing. The niche sites I build are written for search engines and direction, not my political views. If you want to see my personal views see my personal blog, the niche sites are just business.

I wanted to get that out there to prevent a national health care debate or something. Thanks :)

Brian the idea is great, but the key here is good domain name. I think even a .info domain name will do the thing which you are trying to achieve here.. Brian you have added lots of post regarding how to start and how you started, it will be much better if you share the success story so that we can be more confident when spending a money on any thing… :)

Wow, finally someone commented on this post. I was starting to think was must be the worst post ever.

I totally understand what you’re saying Harsh and as soon as I have some success I’ll post it here first lol

I don’t pretend to have all the answers, especially on niche domain sites since I’m just beginning too. All of what I post about is from my own experience and that of those I consider authorities on the matter. I know for a fact that there’s money to be made my these methods, more than blogging even. I encourage my readers and subscribers to learn and profit with me and share their thoughts and experiences here, much like you are doing now. It is appreciated and I hope you will continue to do so. As far as I’m concerned, my readers and subscribers are my peers, I’m not a guru by any stretch of the imagination.

On a personal note I feel the vast majority of those ‘gurus’ tell everyone just enough to keep customers coming back for more without revealing a single thing they do to earn those fine profits.

Just as an update, I just registered two new domains from a news report I heard on the radio. I’m reluctant to list them because they are empty right now but they are GovApplianceRebates.com and GovernmentApplianceRebates.com

I was listening to the news on my car radio when I heard a small clip on the Government giving out $200 rebates on new energy efficient appliance purchases in late fall. I almost stopped breathing until I could pull over, boot up my laptop and make the purchase. If paying attention pays off I’ll be in great shape when the time comes. If it doesn’t pan out I’m only out a little over twenty bucks.

I’ve thought of this myself. I think the trick is to pick something that’s likely to be newsworthy for awhile though (swine flu anyone?) or you could put a lot of work into it getting to the top of Google only to see all the search traffic dry up.

I’ve done this for a couple of sports tournaments that last several weeks and reoccur every year or two, so I’m hoping the work I’ve put in this year will pay off in future too.

Your rebates idea sounds like it’ll do well!

I fully expect the search traffic to dry up on most breaking news type domains. We just need to determine if there’s enough time and interest to get enough search traffic and profit to make it worthwhile. Swine flu is a great one because, unfortunately, it’s going to be around for a long time. Those that acted in the beginning when it was breaking news got great domains to work with.

The Cash For Clunkers program ended very quickly but I expect there will still be a little search traffic trickling in for a bit before it completely stops. ABC news just announced the new appliance rebate program so I need to get busy with that site. It launches in late fall so now is the time to work on SEO.

I didn’t consider reoccurring news topics. That’s a great tip.

Yeah if anyone could accurately predict a long shot VP candidate before the election they’d be sitting on a adsense goldmine!

Brian D. Hawkins Reply:

It’s true, elections can run for a long time and get a lot of attention. Overall most breaking news types of events are very short lived but when we can get on board early with those that last several months it should be worth registering a decent domain for one year.

Lol…you have provided a very good reason for watching the news. My mom, who is obsessed with watching it, should act as a lookout for me. She’d love it.

That’s a great idea, networking with friends and family to help find new breaking news. Very nice

For cases like these, where the interest would eventually fade, e.g. palin, would it be ok to use subdomains instead of new domains? I think it should be, unless you are so concerned about ezinearticles not accepting links to subdomains or subfolder urls.

What do you think?

Hi James, I think subdomains are a great idea, especially if the main URL is flexible and versatile. Good point.

I agree with Rod, you have to either pick something with some legs or somehow be way out in front of it in order take full advantage of the new cycle.

It’s true Jim, the media is very quick to move onto other stories and the competition is even quicker to take advantage of the headlines. We certainly have to be on top of our game.

I like the idea of being able to cash in on keyword rich domains in a particluar niche, people are doing it all the time these days. Something good to investigate would be latest inventions, check out the hottest and latest new gear on the streets and try and promote it-if it gets big in the future, you’re in for a treat-high risk, large pay-out situation.

Brian D. Hawkins Reply:

Great tip! I was just reading about a recent inovation that fits exactly what you are talking about. It’s the Multitouch Mouse posted on Mashable.com Microsoft’s Multitouch Mice are Weird, Amazing [Video]. MultitouchMouse.com and MultitouchMice.com are both taken but those would have been perfect if you were the first to act on the news and believed they would gain popularity. Good stuff, I love comments like that.

Brian brilliant idea – I’ve found in over 14 years marketing online is not to be afraid to think outside the box, like you are doing. Some ideas will be a dud but others will be a home run. Obviously an extension of this idea is to find a product, idea or business that has all the signs of becoming real hot and should stay hot for several years. I think the more credible internet marketers you expose yourself to the more likely you are to learn of one of these markets.
