Have You Noticed?

Have you noticed that everyone has an opinion? Not just an opinion, but an opinion on how “you” should do something. I won’t go into everything, but relating to Social Media, I won’t ever tell people what they “should” or “shouldn’t” do. I do offer my advice, you can take it or leave it.

What are the “rules” anyway, and who wrote them? I am not talking about common sense, and some people don’t have any, but I am talking about these unwritten Social Media rules that people seem to think you must follow.

Examples:

  • Auto DM’s – Who said that sending out auto DM’s is against some rule? I don’t personally do that, and have never recommended it, and honestly I do get a little annoyed by it. But have you ever noticed how many people are doing it? Maybe it works for them. Maybe it drives a ton of traffic, or creates sales. I don’t know, like I said I never tried it. But who am I to tell someone else what to do?
  • Self Promotion – Who said you can’t self promote? Who writes these rules that say you should have more “conversation” than you do self promotion? Maybe it works for some to use SM that way! Who am I to say?
  • Advertising – Who said you can’t try to profit from your own accounts? I didn’t! I actually use a few services, and while it isn’t money to write home about, it is more than most people make off Adsense! If people are using it, and are successful at it, then who am I to say any different?

That is just a few of the more popular “rules” everyone seems to be claiming you have to follow. I actually am guilty of this same offense. I say “Who writes these rules, and why must we follow them?”

Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying you should do these things. I am saying that we should all stop being so damned judgmental! Who are we to stick our noses into the air like we are sitting at the country club and others are at the city park? Who are we to make these unwritten rules?

I say if it works for you, then DO IT!!!! What say you?

I totally agree with all the opinions.....
  • I agree to full extent. On ad sense in particular. I cannot see anything wrong in displaying ads, as long as you don't do it sneaky way, and plaster them all over your site. Myself sometimes I go to the site I know that displayed given niche ad.
  • Thanks for information ..Great ahead for me..and i noticed
  • Great information, this has put me on the right track - Thank You!

Nice article and i am agree with all the comments and opinions.
  • If everyone thinks you can't do something..then maybe its high time you prove them wrong! Against all odds, as long as one is motivated enough to keep doing what he wanted to achieve, then in the end he will become successful.
  • The main effect of one filed is all over Seo that's "Social Media" It takes time in order to reap its immense benefits as a marketing tool, but as you develop relationships, your customers become part of your effort. They talk about you and your products when they become fans of your page or follow you on social networks. Thanks for such nice post, keep updating like that.
  • Well, advice only goes as far as people listen up. The way we really learn is through real experiences. In this piece, I know some people who listened to the advice of experts, ignored it, did what they wanted to do, and still succeeded.

  • I think some amount of social Interaction is also needed when we use social media. I think everything automated will not work. The reader/fans/friends will sense that he/she is there only to promote his product or business and will stop being interested in his tweets/status updates

If you’re new to blogging and social media and you feel like everyone else is getting traffic but you, understand that it takes some time and effort, but it will get easier. Once you have established a bit of a reader base and you’ve hopefully attracted some social media users to your blog, it will be much easier for you to get votes and ultimately get more exposure. The more you use social media the more you will understand about how it works and how users will respond.

When businesses establish a presence on the Internet and actively use social media tools, they become more visible to both current and potential customers. • Sorry to sound dumb but whats an Auto DM?

I guess there was only one rule they followed: They were convinced that what they were doing was right!
  • Great points. With web branding and identity establishment and all the competition nowadays, how could you not break these "unwritten rules" against self-promotion and advertising in the world of social bookmarking?
  • Yes, other people always know best what you should do and what to say than you samim.Eto problem of human psychology. This is often the one who says that you do, do it yourself would never have become.
  • Some bold word Keith. Basically there are some widespread sense involve in it. If you always talk about your self then how can an individual then interact with you! Attempt it in your true existence and I wonder if you going to have anybody close to you for chat following a day. About Auto DM, most of us generally do not open it.
  • What when you don't would like to interact, but only promote? I do not do that myself, but I'm just saying, yes there is typical sense, but is it up to us to produce these unwritten rules and tell other people what to do?
  • This too falls into the ream of what we were somewhat discussing elsewhere - stop giving opinion as fact.

Although yes, as some mentioned there are some common sense etiquette "rules" that SHOULD be followed.....assuming you want to be around more then a week. lol
  • Good idea going over these unwritten rules people preach. Social media is a new communication medium with few set rules. Of course going against these unwritten rules can reflect poorly upon you in other people's eyes. If someone chooses to spam, people consider them a spammer. If someone is always self promoting, they might be considered egotistical. If someone is always advertising instead of interacting, they look greedy. These are all factors that affect whether people follow you or read what you have to say. Sure you are technically allowed to break the unwritten rules, but don't be surprised if it has negative repercussions on your long term success. Not everyone will view the rule breaking how you might hope.

Try it in your real life and I wonder if you going to have anyone around you for chat after a day. About Auto DM, most of us usually don't open it. • As I said we can only advice people but can't ask people. We advice others from our experience, it's upto other to chose it or not. And if someone won't willing to interact, most probably he have some robot followers, a real people not going to follow them at all.
  • I agree with you Arafat, I actually enjoy the interaction I get on Twitter and other social media outlets, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
  • No matter whether it be life, small business, perform or play, it's up to you to create your own rules. Blaze your own path. Test boundaries. See what runs to suit your needs. Measure what performs and what doesn't.

When someone tells you not to accomplish something do it any way just to piss them off.

  • "When someone tells you not to do something do it any way just to piss them off." RIGHT ON!
  • Noticed & agreed! If the Wright brothers followed any conventional rules then, I wonder if flying across the ocean in a big piece of metal is ever possible. But they made it happen.

    Good point, Keith.
  • Great example Yan! I usually like to go against the grain and make my own path anyway, I might have to learn the hard way sometimes, but it usually pays off for me.
