Joining Google’s PageRank N/A Club

I wasn’t going to post about Google’s recent toolbar pagerank update because there are about a million other posts about it already. But I just noticed that while all of my pages, other than the index page, went to a N/A, the about page on DennisEdell.com has a page rank of three. Don’t misunderstand, I’m not jealous, I just want more than Dennis lol

Seriously, I need to get those pages back up and the way I see it I have about 45 days before the next update. I think I’m going to make another test of it because that’s what us geeks do. I’m going to use blog commenting to bring my Friend’s Page up and other link strategies to bring up the page rank on our photo gallery. I’m not sure about the other pages yet. Now I’m talking about pages her, no blog posts. Any ideas?

I left over thirty blog comments so far today using http://extremeezine.com/friends/ as the URL. The first blogs I commented on was everyone on that page. Are you listed there? See Are You A Blogging Friend To The Extreme Ezine? Get On The List!

Any suggestions other than the linking that I’m already doing to get out of the nasty n/a club?

One more thing that has bothered me for a while. Sheryl from the Blog Co-Op brought it to my attention. My pages and older posts, INCLUDING my index page are not cached by Google. I have no idea why, how to fix it or if it’s even important. Do you?

Speaking about the Blog Co-op, they also joined the n/a club. Brad and Sheryl are the very best of people and they go WAY out of their way to help others. I’m going to link to their forum, The Internet Marketers Guild, and the Blog Co-op from my front page and it would be great if some of you would too. The entire reason for the Co-Op is to help bloggers like us. I think giving back a little is the least we can do.

  • Give me lots of thinking , I have PR 4 few months ago , and now it is N/A . Pure blogspot blog, I need to do something. hehe
  • Sorry to hear about your PageRank problems. Just remember that the toolbar PR is simply a number that mostly only affects advertising appeal. It is very common for a PR3 site to have no internal pages with PR. It's simply because your internal pages don't have enough good backlinks. To resolve this minor issue, you need to either build more deeplinks or work at building your homepage to PR4+. Good luck, but remember that traffic & search engine rankings are more important than the toolbar.
  • Web Your Name
Web Your Name® still has a ton of N/A or technincally N/R (not ranked) pages. It seems like Google withholds PageRank data during an export just to keep the 'guessing game' going. I don't believe pages are N/R despite the toolbar saying so. If it has a link internal or external and is in the Google index, than it has PageRank in my book. Web Your Name® also has been studying this phenomenon for a while, and has determined its just a secrecy ploy. Congrats to Keith on expanding his digital territory, I now have another site to harass him on ;=) J/K. Good post.

Oh, don't forget to Web Your Name®.
  • Yikes! I'm afraid to go look at how many n/a pages I have. During the last PR update we dropped 1 digit across the board. Our rankings remained unchanged however. But the ego was little hurt! [grins]
  • Hi, just thought I'd chime in with a couple thoughts: Google generally doesn't like when you have anchor text links to all your pages in the footer. They call it footer spam and sometimes hand out a small penalty for it. Another reason might be the Friends page itself - if most of those blogs are linking back to yours (which they are, since you comment on them and leave your link) it may be perceived as basically a link network. And that's also frowned upon by Google since the links are not occurring "naturally" (by people linking to you of their own free will, rather than you leaving your own link somewhere.) So maybe those things are contributing to your N/A status...
  • Google pagerank isnt the only factor they use, its probably not even worth worrying about as they keep moving the goalposts and changing the way sites are ranked eg on load speed.

You could spend ages getting a high pr for them to decide they arent using pagerank any more.
  • Hey Brian, I wanted to stop in & say Thank You for the links & the compliment. I commented on your Extreme Ezine FaceBook Fan page because of some things I was reading about getting it authority. But, I don't think my comment helped your page much. I think only post made by the page gets spidered & not comments or post by others. LOL!

Oh well, I still can't figure out why in the ^%#$ even your Friends page is not cached. It has 1000 links & it hooked at every post via the bar. Yet, other pages are cached with almost no links. You might try editing it & putting a new 200+ word part at the top & repinging it. You will also notice that your Friends page has - link rel="canonical" - I think that tells G that it is not to give rank because this tag is used for duplicate pages. You will want to look into that as, I am not sure right now if that is the issue. My brain is mush!

Oh as for the PR - LMFAO! Cait has a site with 3 post & only hardly any links (none worth much) & it got a toolbar rank of 1. Might just be G giving out an atta boy for starting a new site.

Ok, mush brain rattling is over.

I looked up link rel=”canonical” and it looks like it's a tag Google uses to handle duplicate content. See Specify your canonical.

I had a hell of a time figuring out where it was coming from. I could see it in the 'view source' but it wasn't anywhere in the header or pages. Then I found a little tick box under the 'All in One SEO Plugin' options for canonical url. It was checked :(

I unchecked the box and will do like you said and add/change content and re-ping the pages. It looks like that applied to all pages, including post pages.

I hope you know how much you are appreciated Sheryl. I was very nice of you to look over my site like that. Thank you :)
  • Brad@Pest control companies in
The N/A club suggests your page is not ranked, so it indirectly suggests that maybe your website is relatively common, particularly if the website is new. Give it some time or you can try any of the unethical means to try and get your page ranked among the high ranked pages.
  • Thanks for the input Brad, but you're wrong on all points. Nice try though.

  • Since I have no PR on my fun blog, but PR 4 on the blog that doesn't get as much attention, I'm certainly the wrong guy to ask. Then again, before Google kicked PR off my site it was either a 3 or 4, so I figure it was just keeping it out there with the masses.

Good thing I don't overly miss it. :-)

  • It's funny how that works Mitch. I'm assuming you are referring to the Top Finance Blog. It looks like you get less interaction there but you have a ton if inbound links to it. Great content too ;)
  • I don't worry about page rank at all. What I look for is high number of uniques and pageviews, and a low bounce rate. I'm hopeful that the people who visit are interested - in reading - and also hopefully in seeing what the ads are about :D and buying some Amazon stuff.

Don’t let PR affect you a lot. It does not matter much. I understand that it’s difficult not to ignore it. Internal linking is significant.

No suggestions from my side other than linking, figure out in my mind. Getting outside links to about page can help. I guess there would be many other reasons that could affect PR. Thinking about this!
  • Dennis, PR does not really matter but I must admit I take notice of it. I think its a man thing, how big is yours scenario.

Internal linking is key it lets google know what pages are about and which one's are important.

  • Thanks Suzanne, we'll get it back up. BTW, I'm about half way through your ebook Blogging Idol Secrets Revealed. You did a great job :)
  • Thanks for the feedback on my eBook. ;) There's a lot there and that was one concern. I know when I have long ebooks I usually don't get the chance to finish. I'm putting together some auto-responder emails that break it down so for those who don't get through the book or put it down and don't implement ... the emails might serve as reminders to ACT on the info.

  • Hi John, they're showing n/a on my firefox. Hopfully someone else will jump in and clear it up. Wouldn't it be funny if I was doing this whole thing and my rank had actually went up? lol
  • Hi Brian I have been basically avoiding this post all day just because I have so much to say. I believe I am POed at the PR for no reason really. We all should know by now that toolbar page rank is a very small part of the effectiveness of a site. PR is basically for aesthetics. What I'm saying is visually it is worth more than functionally (the wow factor).

Although I know all this it still makes me mad loosing it. Pages are still indexed and pulling up in searches. I am just a little frustrated and ready to step back and assess all that we have going it's getting to be a bit too much to manage. The Guild for instance I felt I could get maybe 30 to 50 people that could understand it and use it. That number of people would be manageable and create enough variety and have real good power. I didn't market it properly so I need to make a decision to downsize it a bit and let it run or market it. The marketing part would be a huge educational undertaking. Just getting people to understand good links from bad links, effective links from worthless links also the value of anchor text ~ Brian ~ lol

I have read the comments and agree with allot of what is said. But there is still a conformation that there will always be differences in SEO techniques. Never a problem if it's working than keep on doing it.

At some point I see Google getting rid of the PR system. Seems like they have been phasing it out slowly over time. They are just keeping it around to get our blood pressure up every 3 months.
.-= Brad West ´s last blog ..Need New Passwords? =-.
  • I think you are right Brad, Google rank is very over rated but as long as everyone I know has the toolbar installed I know most are grading us on the green bar, even if only subconsciously.

As far as being mad about it, I am not angry about my sites because, like I said, I have no one to blame but myself. I have done almost nothing trying to build it. And there are other, more important benefits to gaining those links as well.

As far as the Co-op, I feel bad because you and Sheryl put so much faith in the rest of us. I don't agree those links are worthless now but I do think we can get the section back up though. (Check my link to make sure it's correct on the post).

I didn't use the Co-op properly either. I wasn't adding most posts and when I did I never pointed anything back at it. Somehow I failed to understand the importance of that part. We can all learn and work on small setbacks like this, even though it's not really a big deal ;)

BTW, wouldn't the Co-op rank better with a solid URL? It seems so deep with that URL but I'm not sure how that works. Just thinking out loud.
  • Haha... Wish you had a cam on to catch your reaction when you saw Dennis had PR on his "About" page... I can only imagine.

  • Your post title caught my attention, Brian. Anyway, there are hundreds of factors (kept in secrecy) affecting PR and we can't say for sure how to increase PR.

M own experimentation of not leaking out too many link juice (aka nofollow) yields a PR5 on my blogging blog. I know die-hard dofollowers might disagree....

And how to get out of N/A club? Hint: One ezine link is worth more than 30 blog comments. It's always quality vs quantity.

PS: By the way, I have stopped looking at PR since it doesn't affect your ranking in search engine.
