Blog Gone Mobile

Mobile devises are quickly becoming one of the most popular electronic purchases around. The internet is here to stay and so is blogging. It stands to reason that if we’re [bloggers] going to survive the future we need to move with the trends.

There’s no better time to prepare our blogs for the future then right now as we count down the final days until 2009. By preparing for the future I mean going mobile. Sounds scary I know. You would think we would need a new URL, format and somehow get our content into a special site that is mobile device friendly with those tiny screens. Thankfully it’s not that difficult. In fact I setup a mobile version of the Extreme Ezine blog in minutes.

Blog4Mobile.com [Sorry, Blog4Mobile.com is down taking our mobile URL with it] has really simplified things for us. Using our logo and feed Blog4Mobile.com provides us a unique URL that our visitors can use in their cell phones and PDAs. Our mobile URL is [removed] but I plan to redirect to it using a sub-domain.

Hey hey Brian, been some time since I saw you. Been busy huh?

Dennis Edell  on December 28th, 2008

Very cool, thanks for the find. Have you looked at any of the plugins for making your blog mobile ready?

Brian  on December 28th, 2008

I didn’t know there were plugins that do that Dennis. I have a feeling I’m going to feel silly in a few minutes.

Dennis Edell  on December 28th, 2008

LOL there are a couple around. If I come across them again, I’ll point them out.

Atniz  on December 30th, 2008

I’m still using my computer to write my blog post. Still not upgrade yet.. not enough money for now. Maybe, 2009 will be possible to bring all my blog mobile.

Brian  on December 30th, 2008

Hi Atniz, Blog4Mobile.com is a free service that takes your blog content and formats it so mobile users can easily read it on their devices. I don’t think it allows you to post to your blog but I bet it won’t be too long before we see that type of program from somewhere. That may be a nice idea for someone to run with.

Lol don’t be! Just pretend you know.. =P

Yep, Dennis was right, there are a ton of plugins. Here’s the link to those listed on WordPress:

Great tip. Yes, the WordPress plugins work great. And then you never have to worry about relying on an external website.

Brian  on January 3rd, 2009

Thanks Shirley, I still need to get in there and check those out. Getting lazy I guess. I started to try one but I couldn’t tell what it did. I don’t want it to format my main site for mobile so it’s unreadable online.

Getting a website to display correctly on a mobile device is going to be big so i think we should all look at it. I’m quite new to wordpress myself so it’s something for the future…

Hi Mark, The Extreme Ezine looks ok in my Samsung Instinct thanks to a WordPress plugin. I need to update this post because Blog4Mobile.com is down and it took our mobile URL with it. The plugin detects a mobile devise and automatically uses the correct format.

I have been using Alex’s plugin to make my blog mobile-friendly. But I am not having satisfying result. So, IMO, mobile users are not still ready to browse informational website through mobile.

Mobile internet users are limited to FAcebook and IM till now.

Well, I haven’t tried that so far doing that stuff in my mobile. But I guess it would be hard for us to get websites using mobile. I hope that will work so well in the future.
