Are Decent Dot Coms Still Available? Most of us would prefer a dot-com domain over another extension. There are exceptions of course such as exotic extensions like .TV and .MOBI but for the most part we prefer a .COM. As a ‘part two‘ to my post back in October ‘Searching For The Perfect Domain Name‘ I have listed several free online tools you can use to find your perfect domain.
Free Online Domain Name Tools
- Instant Domain Search is a free service that instantly checks .com, .net, and .org domain name availability as you type.
- NameTumbler lets you search for and check up to 500 domains at a time.
- It looks like Yahoo! domains uses this same service as DomainTools’ Domain Suggestion Tool
- Search for 3, 4 , 5 or 6 letter random domain names at Domain Name Soup
- The NameBoy Domain Name Generator is similar to the one by DomainTools but with different results.
- Domain Exposer is a very fast and easy domain name search tool.

Protect Your Find
Protect your brand with DomainTools’ Domain Typo Generator. I used it to find that ExtremEzine.com/ (missing an ‘e’) and ExtremeEzines.com (plural) are already registered by other people – bummer. ):
HURRY - Grab these up: Feel free to register these if you like. While playing around, I mean researching
I found that FreeBloggerTools.com and TopBlogTools.com were available at the time of this post. Please leave a comment below if you take one or both so I can cross them out.

Whenever I go to register at godaddy, if the name is taken they also provide good “suggestion lists” right there.
OK am I nuts, or did you have commentluv before?
You’re right Dennis, I don’t know what happened to my commentluv plugin. I just checked and it’s still activated. I upgraded to WordPress 2.7 this weekend, I hope that didn’t mess it up. If I can’t figure it out I try their website for help.
Some have deleted and reinstalled ok, but yea just contact Andy…he’ll be all over it.
Since it isn’t working, I hope you don’t mind the following…

That’s $100 first prize – gonna shoot for the gold?
No problem Dennis. In fact, I’ll be writing a post on contests I’m helping to sponsor shorty.
Very nice list!
I see that above sites are not included:

Thanks Bash Bosh, Psychic Whois is pretty cool.
Yup, I like it too
In the terms of using syndication with social bookmarks, do you still feel that .com domain names are so relevant?
I do Kevin. I feel, in most cases, if you can get a .com you should. Social bookmarks are great for new traffic but what about Joe going to work and telling his friend he found a great site to checkout. He thinks it’s ‘francofiles.com’?
I know those cases are getting fewer and fewer because he’s more likely to email his friend a link. It’s getting even better with mobile technology.
In a perfect world we would own both/all extensions but that’s not always possible.
I will say this though. If you already have an established site it would be crazy to change the URL just for a .com domain. I’m just referring to new sites in the works.
Just tried out domainnamesoup from your suggestion tool list, and it works well. Except all the good short domains are already gone…
Pauls last blog post..Kent coast
Hi Paul, Domain Name Soup is pretty cool. Most short domains are taken but there are some pretty good ones to be found. I’ve found it almost addicting to search for cool domain names. Did you see my post 100 Dollar Domains – Special Offer?

Domain Name Tips From Experience
Hi Brain, i have a bit of an issue here. Which is it that you keep deleting all my posts? I have done more than 3 contributions to your blog and none published.
@domains: I assure you it wasn’t intentional. I can guess why your comments didn’t get through. I don’t want to lecture but I think this will help you (and others) with other blogs too. It has to do with the name you are using, ‘domains’.
At the time of this reply we only have 879 approved comments yet Akismet has filtered 5,032 spam comments. That’s a lot of checking before the comments are deleted. When you put something like ‘domain’ as your name it’s a lot more likely to be filtered as spam by Akismet. I recently updated our Comment Policy to allow key words but I do ask that an actual name be used. Even something like ‘First Name – Cheap Domain Names’ would be fine. We feel like you are a person and you get even better key word benefit. Win-Win
I do apologize that your contributions were deleted and I hope you will try again. I’ll look for your comments and be sure to approve them.
Thanks Brain, for taking time to explain all these to me. The points you raised are taken onboard – thanks!
Glad to help Kenny, thanks for coming back.
yup this is a good information… i will do get free domain

I just found another cool domain tool so I’ll add it here:
DomainsBot
Best suggestions are a name that works with your niche, perhaps suggests the topic, and is easy to type/hype.
Well said Ben.
